Illegally gated estates Residents give barriers the thumbs up despite council’s objection

Residents of several non-gated housing schemes in Seberang Prai have no plans to dismantle their guardhouses and boom barriers although the structures are illegal.

They claimed the security measures are necessary to prevent rising crime in their neighbourhood.

Taman Sri Bukit Indah Rukun Tetangga (RT) chairman Alex Thai Leong San, 49, said they engaged a 24-hour security firm following several snatch theft and break-in cases at the housing scheme in Bukit Mertajam.

“When we temporarily removed the barrier booms for three months following the Seberang Prai Muni-cipal Council’s directive last year, there were three break-in cases in our area.

“We also found a stolen Mercedes Benz from elsewhere abandoned in our neighbourhood,” he claimed in an interview.

Last week, council secretary Rozali Mohamud said it had identified 14 housing schemes in Seberang Prai that had unauthorised guardhouses with boom barriers.

They are Taman Tambun Indah, Taman Sungai Bakap, Taman Bayu Mutiara, Taman Idaman, Taman Bukit Minyak, Taman Bukit Indah, Taman Keenways, Taman Bukit Kecil, Taman Remia, Taman Kelisa Emas, Taman Pauh Indah, Taman Desa Murni Fasa 2, Taman Senangan and Penang Golf Resort.

Municipal councillor Oon Neow Aun had earlier raised the issue at a full council meeting.

He said motorists were required to surrender their MyKad to enter Taman Keenways, a non-gated residential scheme in Bukit Mertajam.

Oon claimed that residents there had set up an illegal security check post with a boom barrier that inconvenienced motorists entering the area.

Thai said the 250 households in his luxury residential scheme fork out RM60 each a month for the ser-vice involving manned guardhouses and neighbourhood patrols.

“We raised about RM12,000 from residents to buy and install the auto-gate system at the guardhouse.

“We also spend about RM7,000 a month to pay the salaries of the five security personnel,” he said.

Taman Bukit Minyak resident K. Puspakaran said the issue of guardhouses and boom barriers obstructing public roads should not arise if there is 24-hour presence by security guards.

“There will always be someone manning the guardhouse. Ambulan-ces, fire engines or police vehicles can easily enter the housing scheme,” he said

Puspakaran said the residents cannot not depend solely on the po-lice to patrol their neighbourhood.

He said a neighbour’s house was broken-in four times in the last few years.

Taman Senangan resident Winson David, 52, said he used to pay RM100 a month for round-the-clock security services in his neighbourhood, but it was recently replaced by a night patrolling service at RM10 per month per household.

“There were fewer snatch theft cases after the introduction of the 24-hour security services.

“We felt safe when the security personnel patrol our area since most of our houses are locked up and unoccupied when we are away at work,” he said

Taman Keensway resident Chiam Sooi Young, 47, said residents in the neighbouring Taman Saujana Permai had cut off access to their housing scheme by placing a gate and fence midway of Lorong Saujana Permai 15

“We understand that those who live in luxury bungalows and semi-detached houses in Taman Saujana Permai want their privacy.

“But, what happens if there is an emergency. Who will they look for to get the keys to unlock the gate to enable them to rush out?” he asked.

Oon when contacted said many residents had requested the council to act against unauthorised guardhouses.

He said the council had removed a few structures that caused obstruction on public roads, including guardhouses.

But errant residents kept putting up the structures again, he added.
