TOURISTS can now opt for various day cruises around the island so they can view Penang Island from different perspectives.
State Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang said the cruises, to be managed by Malaysian-British joint venture company, Blue Whale Cruises Sdn Bhd, would be based at Tanjung City Marina.
He added that tourists could choose either Around the Island Tour, Turtle Beach Cruise, Dinner Cruise or Evening Sunset Cruise packages, with their trip starting and ending at the Tanjung City Marina.
“Tourists can admire different facets of this beautiful island and also enjoy the night scenery around the island.
“Several businessmen tried to turn this idea into ventures but were unsuccessful. There must be some improvement done to revive the glory of Penang,” he told reporters after launching the Blue Whale Cruises yesterday.
The Blue Whale is a 14.5m long (47-foot) Chriss Craft Boat powered by two diesel engines. At its widest, the 25 metric tonne boat measures 4.6m and 5.8m high.
The cruises will be run by British skipper Steve Burton, 61, who is Blue Whale Cruises chairman, and his accountant wife Eileen, 51.
Burton, who said it took him eight years to accomplish his “cruise dream”, said children under 13 years were not permitted to take the cruises.
He added that the boat cost about RM1.5m including shipment.
