Board Table Discussion

A Board Table Discussion on “Branding Malaysia as a Destination for Property Investment & Second Home (PI2H)” was held on 8 Jan 2008 at the E&O Hotel, in collaboration with SERI, the Socio-economic & Environmental Research Institute (SERI) of Penang and Malaysia Airlines (MAS), Henry Butcher’s corporate partner in the PI2H program. The discussion focused on the multiple ramifications of branding Malaysia (and Penang in particular) as a destination for property investment and as a 2nd Home.  It is touted as a program of great economic significance as the key objective is to draw foreign investments to the country through the MM2H program and the real estate sector.

The MM2H scheme was in fact preceded by the pilot Silver Hair program that was meant to facilitate the entry of foreigners who had an interest in adopting Malaysia as a retirement base.  Since its inception in 2002, the MM2H program has overcome many of the initial teething problems of implementation and marketing,   The Board Table Discussion gives a timely assessment and reflection of the MM2H scheme, highlighting the experiences and current challenges encountered in the areas of marketing & branding, home design & construction, finance and government regulations. The accompanying forum brought about a better comprehension of the issues requiring strategic attention in the wake of increasing global competition that Penang faces in the international real estate and property market place.
